The one-mile NASCAR track was mostly flat and worn out, putting much more of the racing in the hands of the competitors. Drivers who charge and drivers with strong lap-after-lap technique typically did well at PIR.

That dynamic along with the Track has changed.

After the completion of 2011's Spring Sprint Cup race, PIRs one-mile surface was ripped up, and a multi-million dollar repaving and reconstruction project began. When teams returned in the fall for one of the Chases biggest events, they were greeted by a new surface, a modified race course, and a lot of unknowns.

Beyond a complete repaving, the track now has another new flavor this Fall. The Speedways signature Dogleg along the backstretch is pushed out changing the ways drivers approach and race that area of the track.

The BullRing, and the "SandBox Chain-Gang" now Present Our "Pretty Damn Close NR2003" rendition of the Fall/2011 Phoenix International Raceway.
